S3DA Names New Jersey S3DA State Conservation Coordinator

Scholastic 3-D Archery is pleased to announce John Erndl as the New Jersey S3DA State Conservation Coordinator. John will work directly with Patty Reel, S3DA National Conservation Coordinator, to provide S3DA members across the state with outdoor-related activities and education that is centered around conservation. John has resided in New Jersey his whole life. He has been on the council for the United Bowhunters of New Jersey for thirty years and has been President for thirteen years.

John grew up in the farming community of Monmouth County, New Jersey. His love for the outdoors was instilled at an early age as his father was a big hunter, trapper, and fisherman. At the age of 10, John got his archery and firearm license. His interest in archery also came from his dad as he shot a recurve. John recalled that seeing his dad shoot that recurve bow was so cool and it piqued his interest to the point that he wanted to try it. His love for the sport grew from shooting in the backyard to more organized shoots. In the present day, John enjoys hunting with his wife who just got into archery about five years ago.

John said, “Being involved with the state organization, we see a need to get more youth involved in archery and hunting. Several years ago, we started doing mentored hunts with a focus on kids who don’t have an adult hunting influence in their lives to get them going in the sport. I felt that the S3DA program mission tied perfectly with what we promote at the United Bowhunters of New Jersey, so becoming the State Conservation Coordinator would give me an even bigger platform and resources to expand on what we have already started.”

John said that he intends to setup at county fairs and any outdoor events that will allow him to, so that he can reach as many young people and their families as possible. His long-term goal is to create and develop mentored hunting programs across the state. He added, “Youth are the future of this sport and if we don’t get them in the outdoors, we will have no one to pass this wonderful tradition down to. New Jersey has a strong anti-hunting population, and we are always defending the sport against uneducated attacks. If we can educate the non-hunting public on why conservation is necessary, even if they don’t hunt, they will at least be an ally to the sport.”
